The best retirements are planned

As a  Professional adviser, you will know that the realities of the third millennium dictate that everyone must plan how to finance their retirement. There are now more options available to your clients, so it makes sense for them to take your professional advice about the right choice to meet their circumstances and aims. In many cases, a SIPP may be the right answer for them.

It is clear that the State Pension alone can never realistically provide a comfortable retirement and most people will have to wait longer to receive it anyway as the pension age is pushed up in stages. Even so, increased life expectancy means that today's workers are statistically likely to have extended retirements, meaning that pension savings will have to deliver retirement income for longer than ever.

Official projections indicate that life expectancy will continue to increase and, although some people may now work into their late sixties and beyond, many are likely to experience a prolonged retirement. In simple terms, this makes it all the more important to build up sufficient pension assets with the aim of maintaining a good standard of living when no longer working.

The solution for some people may come from pension auto-enrolment, the new scheme designed to compel employers to enrol virtually every employee into a pension scheme and make a regular contribution to it, unless an employee opts out. This will remove some of the future pensions burden from the state, but it is not likely to be the perfect plan for everyone.

If a client needs more flexibility in the amounts they contribute to a pension or wants the chance to benefit from a wider spectrum of asset classes than a conventional scheme offers, then a SIPP could be just right for them. Their best opportunity to explore the SIPP option is when they seek your advice about their retirement planning.
